The History

Swissôtel Sydney occupies one of the city’s great retail addresses. In 1929, Farmer & Company opened a new department store on the corner of George and Market which featured an art gallery, rooftop garden, and restaurant. On level 9, the Blaxland Galleries (now restored as our Blaxland Ballroom) hosted gallery exhibitions, high teas and fashion parades. The State Theatre across the road opened in 1929, as a picture palace and remains to this day one of Australia’s most spectacular surviving monuments.
