On the last Sunday of August, the city gives its streets over to the runners of Sydney Marathon. Roads that are usually a wall of traffic go quiet and then fill again with tens of thousands of people moving the same way at once, over the bridge and down through the parks toward the water. The Sydney Marathon has become one of the great mornings on the calendar, and 2026 is a big one. Here is what to know, whether you are running it, watching it, or simply staying in the middle of it.
Planning your Sydney Marathon weekend? Make Swissôtel Sydney your base for the TCS Sydney Marathon 2026, with a central CBD location that puts you close to the action, the finish line and everything you need for a comfortable race weekend.
The 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon runs on Sunday 30 August, with the mini marathon and shorter distances the day before, on Saturday 29 August. The race is now one of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors, alongside London, Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago, Boston and New York, which puts Sydney on the same map as the biggest road races in the world. The 2025 edition drew around 33,000 finishers, and 2026 is set to be larger again. Entry has sold out, so this year the crowd is as much a part of the day as the field.
For visitors travelling to Sydney for the marathon, booking accommodation in the CBD means you can stay close to the event while also having the city’s dining, shopping and attractions on your doorstep.
The marathon starts on the lower North Shore and comes over the Sydney Harbour Bridge early, which is the shot everyone knows, a river of runners with the harbour opening up on both sides. From there the course winds south and east through Moore Park and Centennial Park before turning back toward the water, finishing on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. That finish sits about twenty minutes on foot from our lobby, which makes the whole event unusually easy to fold into a weekend in the city.
The finish sits about twenty minutes on foot from Swissôtel Sydney, making the hotel a convenient base for marathon weekend. After an early start and a full day of cheering or running, being able to return to your CBD accommodation without a long journey adds another level of ease to the weekend.
Two spots do most of the work. The bridge is the great early vantage point, and the finish at the Opera House is the emotional one. If you are staying with us, it’s the perfect location to watch the marathon. The walk down through the Royal Botanic Garden toward Mrs Macquarie’s Point gives you a clear view of the runners coming into the last stretch along the harbour, with the sandstone and the water behind them. Carry on to the forecourt from there for the finish line itself. If you are watching the marathon, being there early helps as the good positions fill well before the leaders arrive, and the road closures reshape the city for the morning.
Saturday belongs to the shorter distances, including the mini marathon that finishes near the Opera House, which is a gentler way into the weekend and a good one for families.
For those staying overnight, it also means the harbour end of the city is busy and celebratory across both days rather than just the Sunday, worth knowing if you are planning meals or a table anywhere near the water.
Make a weekend of the marathon with Sydney accommodation close to the city’s restaurants, bars and attractions, giving you plenty to explore before and after race day.
Race morning is early and the city fills fast, so a room in the CBD earns its keep. Staying at Swissôtel Sydney puts you close to the start transport and finish, while giving you a comfortable place to return to once the race is over. After the race, take some time to slow down at Spa & Sport, with its infrared sauna and hyperbaric oxygen chamber ideal for muscle recovery. Then enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Ten Stories, making the morning after the marathon as enjoyable as the race itself.
For a marathon weekend that combines convenient Sydney accommodation, easy access to the event and the comfort of a central hotel, Swissôtel Sydney is an ideal base.
Life well crafted.
