Rainy Day Activities in Sydney

Things to do in Sydney on a Rainy Day

Things to do in Sydney on a rainy day

Sydney does a good line in grey days, particularly through winter. The trick is knowing the city holds most of its best indoor hours within a few blocks of each other: food courts that reward a second visit, galleries with no entry fee, and cinemas where the rain outside becomes part of the cosy appeal.

Regent Place

A few minutes away from the hotel is Regent Place. A laneway arcade that locals treat as Sydney’s unofficial Japanese food quarter; ramen counters, dessert bars, grocers and small shops packed into one covered building. The precinct itself is part retail part dining hub, and is great for any part of the day: a proper lunch, an afternoon of desserts, or an early dinner before a film.

Sydney Fish Market

The new Sydney Fish Market opened at Blackwattle Bay reopened in early 2026, and a rainy day is arguably the best time to see it. Wholesale trading, retail and dining now sit together under one roof, so you can watch the working markets, then settle in for sashimi, fish and chips or a fine dining experience overlooking the water.

It opens Open Sun – Thurs 7am – 10pm, and Fri & Sat 7am – 12am. The light rail from the city (the stop only 2 minutes away from the hotel) gets you there in under 25 minutes. This way you won’t need to open an umbrella for long.

Art Gallery of NSW

On the eastern edge of the city, the Art Gallery of NSW is a cultural highlight and the perfect place to spend an afternoon in. General entry is free, with a few paid entries for limited exhibitions. The new Naala Badu building sits alongside the original sandstone gallery, and the two together cover everything from First Nations works to international contemporary exhibitions. If the rain eases, the walk back through Hyde Park is one of the city’s great pleasures; if it doesn’t, a taxi or uber to the door takes five minutes.

Madame Tussauds Sydney

Down at Darling Harbour, Madame Tussauds is a reliable few hours under cover, particularly with kids in tow. It houses eleven themed zones and over 100 figures, all self-guided so you can move at your own pace.

Movie time at Sydney’s best cinemas

Sydney’s cinema options split neatly into two camps. Walking distance from the city centre, the George Street Event cinemas handle the big releases with the full recliner treatment. Further afield and worth the short trip, the Ritz in Randwick is a working art deco cinema from 1937, and the Dendy Cinemas in Newtown, Sydney’s hippie district, run the independent and arthouse programs. On a rainy week, a cosy indoor movie date is the way to go.

Make a stay out of it

If you’re staying in the middle of it all, most of this list is within a short walk or one light rail stop of Swissôtel Sydney on Market Street.
